During Use

It is important that care is taken when attaching the strops to the casualty vehicle and recovery vehicle. Ensure the recovery / tow points on both vehicles are suitable for the recovery and in good condition. Care should be taken to ensure there are no twists in the strop.

Taking up the load on the strop should be done under controlled conditions. Magni Recovery Strops are made with Dyneema which has very low elongation at break. If the load is taken up at speed (snatching), then the strop may be overload and broken.

Once the load has been taken up on the strop. Before going further with the recovery the strop and all hardware should be checked to ensure it is still connected properly. Also at this point all persons not directly involved with the recovery should be at least 1.5 times the length of the strop away from all vehicles. For example, if the strop is 10m long than there should be no persons within 15m distance of any part of the recovery vehicle or casualty vehicle unless they are directly involved or required to be for control of the recovery.

Care should be taken to avoid the strop coming into contact with sharp edges during the recovery. The strops are very strong and have extremely good abrasion resistance, but contact with sharp edges under load can cause serious damage to the strop.

Shackles

If shackles are required to secure the strops, ensure they are correctly rated for the task. When tightening a shackle always back off ¼ of a turn. If shackles become distorted during a recovery and are fully tightened it will be almost impossible to release them after the recovery.

Safety Factors

A safety factor of at least 2:1 should always be used for recovery work. A 100t recovery would require a 200t MBL recovery strop and hardware.Storage

When storing your strop, care should be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, oils and general dirty areas. Strops should be packed away clean, dry, in well ventilated area and away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

Dyneema’s strength is affected at 65 degrees.
